Deli

"Deli" was filmed in a real sandwich shop - while it was open! Since the spot was filmed in the summer during good weather, the deli served their food on the shop's back deck, while the inside space was full of actors. The actor who played the man behind the counter is also a trial attorney, who did a great job bringing intensity to the scenes. Originally, "Deli" was intended to be more linear - to have a clear-cut beginning, middle, and end, with no gaps. The editor, however, tried something different, putting all the scenes together in a montage. This worked much better, as it matched the quick-paced, staccato intensity of the environment and of what was being said.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Deli worker: Meatball on white…next…ya’ want mustard on that or not?...c’mon, c’mon, I haven’t got all day here…It doesn’t come with peppers – they’re extra…hurry up, pay the lady…next…the chicken’s fresh, I killed it myself…So that’s what you want?...next! While we’re still young…ya’ know, you told me you wanted mustard…get out of here! Time’s up – back of the line…
Man with sandwich: Hey, excuse me…
Deli worker: What!?
Man with sandwich: Great sandwich…thanks!

Pablo García from Mexico, May 8, 2020

It is necessary to appreciate what others do for you so that they keep doing them, and you give them back and then all community is nice.

Great way to let someone working behind the counter realize you gain more customers AND friends by just being kind. It gives working people a pause for thought. The thought of kindness, of being pleasant, and to just smile. Now that's something that you can pass along & costs nothing!

Sandy from CA, January 24, 2018

Jasmin from Los Angeles, July 16, 2009

It's great that the editor changed his mind and did it with gaps, as it makes the message more powerful. Reminds me of a time when my brother went to the local Sears counter to pick up a package and the clerk/owner was very rude. Rather than react with rudeness he smiled and passed on a compliment. He said she stopped in her tracks, smiled and thanked him. Then went on to ring up his order. And she was nice to the next person behind him. It's amazing how simple a thank-you can change a person's entire day.

Bev M. from Canada, December 28, 2008

Its surprising how many people are surprised by compliments. I grew up always saying thank you. P.S. the chef is a great actor

Marz W. from Hawaii, USA, October 24, 2007

I LOVED this, it's exactly like their slogan "Pass It On." If you are mean and grouchy then the people you are mean and groucy to will also be mean to others and then those people will be mean...but all it takes is a compliment and everyone's attitude will take a 180 spin!!!

Kim B. from Salt Lake City, Utah USA, October 19, 2007

Reminds me of how one simple gesture of kindness can lift one's spirit. I am going to compliment more today and tomorrow...I appreciate the reminder!
