Determination

Determination.
Today on the news I saw a man with no legs trying to become an Olympic swimmer. Then it made me think of when my mom first got in a wheelchair. Way back in 2006 my mom had a stroke in the spinal column. It was a very rare stroke to have and she could not walk. “I’m so very sorry, Tina, but there is nothing we can do to help you. The doctors said. “You are going to be in the wheel chair for the rest of your life. Even if there was a chance of you walking again, they are very near impossible” the doctors said trying not to sound negative.
“Listen up” my mom said in a correcting tone of voice. “I am not going to have a bunch of Doctors dictate my life like they have been there ever since I was born. I will walk and I will prove every one of you wrong and when I do I will walk back up to this hospital and show you,” she said with anger in her voice. She soon got out of the hospital and bought herself a walker and a cane, and told everyone that she would walk again!
Every day after that I saw my mom walking in the walker attempting to walk every day. Each month she got a little further, pushing herself past the limits of anyone’s possibility of thinking. Until finally one day she walked up and down the hall way over 25 times. I never have seen my mom so proud of herself until she walked with a walker. Many weeks later she started using her cane but just as before she didn’t get very far. A few years later my mom could finally walk but she had to use a cane or a walker since she is still not too good walking. Eventually my mom walked with her cane right into the office of the doctors who told her she couldn’t walk. “Hey’’ she said in a loud voice almost a scream. “ I told you I would walk.” Well here I am and I am walking what do you have to say for your selves now?” My mom asked. The doctors where speechless, they had nothing to say at all to my mom.
Until my mom was about to walk out the door one of the doctors said “You really meant what you said…About not having any one dictate your life.” Presently to that guy with no legs he made it to the Olympic Swim team. He must have had a lot of determination to when people told him he had no chance of becoming an Olympian. With a lot of determination anyone, no matter what, can accomplish their goals. All they need is a little push from people who will support them.
