Orange is not the new Black

Last year I began volunteering at the Indiana Women's Prison in a small way helping with family day camp and a couple baby showers when I found out that a small group of educators had come together to offer college classes at no charge. Professors volunteer their time and get books however they can. The students receive credit through a small local university.
I began teaching in August and here is what I have learned. Approximately 85% of female inmates are mothers. While most of them will be getting out the odds of getting a job that will allow them to support themselves and their children is not good. Also, prison is not a game or a tv show. Life is hard as it should be in a prison, but they must have the opportunity to gain skills necessary for life, work, and parenting. They are my students and I am privileged to work with them.
