The Army taught him to be strong. His character taught him to be selfless. My son, Michael H. Ollis died in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan this summer. He was a staff sergeant, just 24 years of age. His base was attacked by Taliban insurgents. Most of the enemy were killed. Amid the smoke and debris one enemy soldier stood alone with a suicide vest. Michael placed himself between the enemy and a Polish officer that he was fighting alongside. The suicide bomber detonated the explosive. Michael was killed. The Polish officer was wounded but alive.
Michael demonstrated an act of ultimate "selflessness" on August 28th, 2013. Posthumously, he is awarded the Silver Star and the Gold Medal of the Polish Armed Forces.

We've all had people in our lives who have made a positive impact on us. A parent or grandparent, a sibling who was there for us, or maybe even just a guy who shines shoes for a living? Whoever they are, tell us their story so they can inspire us even more.
