Base hit of a lifetime

I wanted to share a very special moment that my 11 year old son Brain gave a group of 40-50 kids and parents last night at our baseball game in Churchville, NY. Brian was pitching late in the game and we were winning 7-5. Bases loaded, 2 outs, it was getting dark and it was about to rain. A boy named Nathan (special needs kid) came up to bat. Nathan played last season and only had one hit all year but he loves baseball. Coach John asked Brian to take some speed off his pitches so that Nathan had a chance to get the bat on the ball. He did just that and Nathan made contact hitting it softly back to Brian on the mound. I expected him to throw it home and end the inning (fielders choice). What he did instead was jog down the first base line and throw the ball late allowing Nathan to be safe and drive in a run. The next batter hit a single, driving in several runs and we lost the game. Even with the game on the line, he gave that kid a memory that will last him a lifetime. Nobody asked him to do it and nobody saw it coming. I've never been so proud of my son. It was a beautiful moment to see Nathan celebrate with him teammates and run around like he just won the World Series. I had coaches and parents coming up to me crying and telling me they have never seen anything like that in their lives. Best of all, Brian's teammates were congratulating him too. On top of that the 12U travel coach was there watching our kids when it happened and he addressed our team after the loss. He said one thing to them..."I've been playing and coaching baseball for 40 years and I have never seen anything as great as that in a baseball game. I hope you always remember this day."
