Lisa McMillan has been providing the elderly and students at Jefferson Davis College in Brewton, Alabama, free lunches for the past 3 years. It began when she discovered that students on campus were hungry when 2 young men came into her restaurant and purchased a package of cookies for 1.00 and the 2 sat down and shared these cookies. She was then informed by 2 other people in the restaurant that these 2 young men were hungry and didn't have money. Mrs. McMillan quickly fixed these young men a full lunch free of charge and this began her campaign to feed hungry college students. She was overwhelmed with compassion to feed college students free of charge. I am nominating her because as a previous college student at a University, who didn't have money for a meal plan, I spent lots of hungry nights wishing and hoping that someone would help me with food. She has been campaigning for the hungry since 1995. She walked to Washington in 2005 in order to gain support for her hunger campaign. She also provides free meals to Senior Citizens with low or very limited income and those who are unable to prepare their meals. Anyone can come to the restaurant and get a free meal. She also serves free meals to the public on Mother's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Father's Day. There are more examples I could cite but, I think this gives you a good idea of what an amazing person Lisa is. Her services are provided free of charge and on a voluntary basis with the assistance of two, local contributors to her efforts. To receive no pay and continue with the services she provides is truly an inspiration to all. Brewton, Alabama and Jefferson Davis Community College are blessed to have her in their midst and, I hope you will give her the recognition she deserves for being an "Everyday Hero."
