Anna's little sister was born with an intellectual disability and, like most children, it took Anna time to understand the permanence of her sister's problems. Even before she understood, she was unfailingly careful and protective of Mary -- I used to say there would be a special place in Heaven for Anna for all the times she sneaked behind Mary to a public restroom or somewhere else to assure that her sister would be okay and still have the independence she craved.
Anna's generosity of spirit continues today. Both girls, now 25 and 23, are currently living at home, and Anna helps Mary plan and cook dinner once a week, takes her to the library and generally helps to ensure that Mary has a rich and full life. Neither of my girls is a saint, of course. They squabble and have a very normal sisterly relationship, but Anna's love of and care for her little sister shines over it all.

We've all had people in our lives who have made a positive impact on us. A parent or grandparent, a sibling who was there for us, or maybe even just a guy who shines shoes for a living? Whoever they are, tell us their story so they can inspire us even more.
