Crossing Guard Saves Child from Speeding Car

Annette has served as police officer for the Northeast Police Department, and as a school crossing guard, for 14 years. She had been expecting a typical morning on duty when the frightening incident occurred.

The breathtaking video of the incident shows Annette in her bright orange jacket and hat, raising her hand at oncoming traffic. A young student then enters the crosswalk, preparing to cross the street. As the student steps into the middle of the road, a black sedan ignores Annette’s stop command and barrels through the crosswalk. Annette instantly grabs and pulls the student to the other side of the street and out of harm’s way. The video shows the speeding vehicle narrowly missing the child but striking Annette.

The driver stopped and stepped out of her vehicle to assist Annette who lay injured on the ground. Bystanders also rushed to offer help and call 911. Emergency responders immediately transported her to a local hospital with minor injuries. After leaving the hospital later that day, she went to the girl’s home to check on her to make sure she was doing well.

“The only thing I was thinking was to make sure that little girl was safe and that she wasn't the one to take the impact,” said Annette, reflecting on the dramatic events.

The student, Violet Watt, sent a heartfelt message of gratitude to Annette, her hero.

“Thank you for saving my life, because if you weren’t there then I would be the one going to the hospital,” said Violet.

Maryland Governor, Larry Hogan, awarded Annette with a governor’s citation to honor her incredible heroism.

The community’s supported has touched Annette.

“I learned that the community is an amazing thing," said Annette. The incident proved to her that people care and appreciate her willingness to do whatever is necessary to protect their children.

Police cited the driver for negligent driving and driving with an expired registration plate. Annette hopes the incident raises awareness about distracted driving.
